101 Ways to Live Well: Tips 7-9

Do you find my brain? - Auf der Suche nach mei...

7. Banish negativity. You have “Mind Control” power over yourself! Therefore, do not be negative.

Each time you think something, a pathway is forged that allows you to think the same thought more easily next time–your nerve cells literally stretch to be closer together. It is a physical change. Do not let your body grow in a way that will make you bitter. Positivity will improve your social life AND your physical health–prolonged negative thoughts will damage your health.

Does a certain thought or memory always drag you down? Try this little trick: When you think about it, immediately think of something for which you are thankful. Focus on the new thought until you feel calm. What you are doing is “weakening” the connection from the particular thought to the negative outlook. If you consistently divert your thoughts to gratitude, you will find you dwell less and less–and banish negativity for good! And in doing this you are forging a new, positive, pathway that will be helpful for future relationships. Remember: have an attitude of gratitude.

8. Eat enough fat. Fat allows the body to balance hormones, promote the immune system, feel satisfied, and think clearly.

How do we know which fat is good? The technical terms for the “good fats” are “Mono-” and “Poly unsaturated” fats.

Use the “room-temperature test”: Liquids at room temperature are “good”, while solids at room temperature are to be limited. But stay away from all trans fats–labeled as “Partially hydrogenated” or “hydrogenated” oil on ingredients lists. Sources of good fats are EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and other unprocessed oils, wild caught salmon and other fish. Saturated fats have their place in avocados and fatty plants (seeds, nuts), but do not overdo it on saturated animal fat (butter, chicken skin, fat-rich beef).

“Low-fat” or “Fat-free” products are tricky. They advertise fewer calories but many produce cravings for MORE to feel satisfied. Furthermore, our bodies cannot digest the chemicals used to mimic fat and will store them in our fat tissue. (And we don’t want to add to that in any way, do we?) Instead, stick with small portions of full-fat products. Better yet, stick with naturally fatty products.

9. Use a good cervical pillow. A comfortable pillow should support your neck and help promote proper posture and spinal alignment while you sleep. These can be properly fitted to your spine by a chiropractor. They are not as cheap as regular pillows, but are a health investment that can have an amazing payoff. A properly fitted pillow will support your unique spine. When your spine is properly aligned, it allows your nerves to communicate more effectively with the rest of the body; this improves EVERYTHING. Your immune system will be more effective at fighting inflammation. You will think more clearly. Your entire musculoskeletal system will work better. Regular visits to a chiropractor are advised, but sleeping with a good pillow is an easy step you can take immediately to promote your health.
